What is a cataract and how do I know if I need surgery?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, the part of the eye that focuses light. Cataracts make a person’s vision blurry or hazy with dull colors. Cataracts can also cause glare making driving at night difficult with oncoming headlights. Dr. Haas specializes in the removal of cataracts and implantation of premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) to correct vision.
What happens during surgery and is it painful?
Dr. Haas performs his surgery at a certified outpatient surgery center with an outstanding record of patient surgery. The cataract is removed from the eye and replaced with a clear artificial lens implant (IOL). There is minimal to no pain during the surgery or in the postoperative period. Most patients notice an immediate improvement in their vision and can return to work the next day. Dr. Haas uses cutting edge technology and is one of Orlando’s most experienced surgeons with premium intraocular lenses (IOLs).
If I want to see without glasses, which implant is right for me?
There are many intraocular lens implants (IOLs) to choose from. We perform many tests and measurements as well as discuss your lifestyle and expectations. Dr. Haas will look at the test results and discuss the IOL options with you. There are premium IOLs that may correct your vision for both near and far distances, getting you out of eyeglasses altogether!
Will I need to have cataract surgery again?
No, the result of cataract surgery is permanent. However, sometimes patients experience decreased vision after surgery due to a clouding of the clear membrane that supports the IOL. This causes the same symptoms as a cataract with cloudy vision and glare. A simple laser procedure can clear this membrane returning clear vision. This membrane does not grow back and the result is permanent.
What is the success rate of cataract surgery?
With his approach to custom cataract surgery, Dr. Haas has a 90% success rate for getting patients out glasses for most day to day activities.
