December 4, 2014Paying for a Cosmetic Procedure: 4 Tried-and-True Options
February 11, 2015Nobody wants to be limited to a single choice, especially when it comes to their own body. That’s why BOTOX® customers all over the country are embracing the recent introduction of a BOTOX® alternative called XEOMIN®.
So what is XEOMIN®, and is it right for you? Let’s take a look at how it compares with BOTOX®.
What is XEOMIN®?
XEOMIN®, in effect, is the same as BOTOX® in many ways. Both are used to treat adults with cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, or frown lines. XEOMIN® and BOTOX® are even made from the same bacteria.
The FDA recently approved XEOMIN® for commercial use, making the US the 20th country to do so.
How does XEOMIN® compare to BOTOX®?
When the FDA approved XEOMIN®, they looked at two clinical trials, one of which was published in the Journal of Neurological Sciences. That study determined that both the efficacy and safety of XEOMIN® showed “non-inferiority” to BOTOX®. In other words, XEOMIN® is just as effective and just as safe as BOTOX®.
Where BOTOX® has a decided advantage is in brand recognition: everyone knows what BOTOX® is, and because XEOMIN® is so new, it’s easily the more popular of the two. Today, however, more than 84,000 people have been treated with XEOMIN®, and that number grows every day.
One of the key differences of XEOMIN® and BOTOX® is their ingredients: XEOMIN® contains just a single ingredient, which means it can be classified as a “naked injectable.” Because of that simplicity, the body may be less likely to build up a resistance to XEOMIN® than BOTOX®.
Which is better?
In the time it takes for XEOMIN® and BOTOX® to take effect, the two are pretty equal. In terms of how long the effects last, they’re also very similar. In some cases, BOTOX® will be more cost-effective. In others, XEOMIN® will have the edge.
So which is better, XEOMIN® or BOTOX®?
The answer: it depends. Like any medical question, the answer is best determined by a medical professional who can take into account both the clinical factors and knowledge of your personal history and needs. So the better question is: which is right for you?
